Edward Cole (JACK NICHOLSON), the millionaire company owner, and Carter Chambers (MORGAN FREEMAN), the working-class car mechanic, lead completely different lives. Their paths intersect when they share a hospital room and discover they have two common desires: to spend the remaining part of their lives doing everything they've always wanted to do before "kicking the bucket," and a need for reconciliation with themselves that they were not aware of.

Together, they embark on a road trip of their lives, becoming friends and learning to live life to the fullest with insight and humor.
