Johnny Boz is found dead in his bed, he was an old rock star and owner of a San Francisco nightclub. Detective Nick Curran is assigned to investigate the murder. He has a history of alcohol and drug addiction. Catherine Tramell is a famous writer, and the murder is identical to a story she wrote in one of her books. The police focus on two possibilities: either the killer is the writer herself or a devoted reader who closely follows her novels. Beth, Nick's former girlfriend, tries to shift the suspicions onto Catherine, but suddenly finds herself becoming a suspect. Catherine is much smarter than she appears.
